Product care

Because wood is an organic material, it needs regular care to prevent it from drying out.(Approximately every six months)

Our grips have been treated with a blend of natural oils; therefore, we recommend using natural oils such as tung or linseed oil to maintain their beauty. We use a mix of tung and linseed oils on our grips during production, but either one alone is suitable for ongoing care of the wood.

For cleaning the grips, it is best to use denatured alcohol or other wood-cleaning products. Never use water!

After removing any impurities, apply some oil onto the surface of the grips with a soft paintbrush or a piece of clean cloth. For better results, warm the oil beforehand to 30-40°C (86-104°F). Apply the oil sparingly to the whole surface and then let it dry at room temperature.

Repeat this process whenever the wood dries out or, as a preventative measure, twice a year. Never allow the grips to get wet! Moisture in the wood, especially with thinner grips, can cause them to warp, adversely affecting their fit and possibly causing rot should the moisture not be removed. Wet or damp grips can be dried using a soft absorbent cloth or paper towel, avoiding rough cloths as they can scratch the wood.

Never allow grips to dry out; they should be re-oiled to prevent drying out, as they can be weakened and prone to cracking or other damage, especially if the gun is fired or the grips tightened when they are extremely dry.

Wood grips can be damaged by abuse, so be careful to avoid impacts or situations that may chip, scratch, or dent your grips to keep them looking nice. Abrasion should be avoided, especially from ill-fitting holsters (lined holsters can help protect both gun and grips), and carry weapons are particularly vulnerable to such wear.

Introduction to Custom Wood Grips

The allure of custom wooden grips lies not just in their aesthetic appeal but in their ability to transform the very essence of a firearm. For enthusiasts and professionals alike, the choice of grip material is pivotal, shaping the handling, balance, and ultimately, the performance of the gun. Among the myriad options available, wooden grips stand out for their classic beauty, warmth, and the unparalleled individuality they bring to each piece.

The Importance of Personalization in Firearms

In the realm of firearms, customization is not merely a matter of personal taste but a testament to the owner's identity and their connection to the weapon. Wooden grips, with their unique textures and patterns, offer an unmatched level of personalization. Each piece of wood tells a different story, with its grain patterns and colors varying from one grip to another, ensuring that no two grips are ever identical. This uniqueness is what makes wooden grips a popular choice among those looking to make a personal statement with their firearms.

What Sets Wood Grips Apart?

Wooden grips provide a tactile experience that synthetic materials cannot replicate. The warmth of wood under the palm, the texture of the grain against the skin, and the natural grip it offers make wooden grips an ideal choice for both aesthetic and practical reasons. Beyond the tactile benefits, wood's natural vibration dampening properties contribute to a smoother shooting experience, reducing the recoil felt in the hand.
Moreover, the aesthetic appeal of wood—ranging from the deep, rich tones of walnut to the light, elegant hues of maple—adds a level of sophistication and class to firearms that is both timeless and distinguished.

Overview of Popular Wood Types for Grips

Selecting the right wood for your grip is crucial. Different types of wood not only vary in color and grain pattern but also in density and durability. Hardwoods like walnut, maple, and cherry are popular choices for their strength and enduring beauty. Exotic woods such as cocobolo and ebony offer unique colors and patterns, making them coveted for high-end customizations.
In conclusion, the choice of wooden grips is a deeply personal one, reflecting the owner's style, preference, and the relationship they share with their firearm. As we delve deeper into the world of custom wood grips, remember that each piece of wood, with its unique characteristics, has the potential to transform your firearm into a personal treasure.

The Design Process of Custom Wood Grips

Selecting the Right Wood

The choice of wood is the cornerstone of crafting a custom grip that truly stands out. This selection is not merely about the visual appeal but also involves considering the wood's durability, workability, and how it ages over time. Hardwoods, known for their dense and resilient nature, are often preferred for their longevity and ability to withstand the rigors of use.

  • Hardwood vs. Softwood: Which Is Better for Grips?
Hardwoods, such as walnut, oak, and maple, offer superior strength and durability, making them ideal for grips that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Their dense structure not only provides a solid feel but also ensures that the grips can endure the wear and tear of regular use. Softwoods, while lighter and easier to shape, lack the durability and resistance required for a firearm grip, making hardwoods the clear choice for those seeking longevity and reliability.
  • The Role of Grain Patterns in Grip Aesthetics
The grain pattern of wood not only contributes to the grip's beauty but also its uniqueness. Each piece of wood has a distinctive grain pattern, like a fingerprint, adding character and individuality to the grips. These patterns can range from simple and subtle to complex and bold, influencing the final look of the firearm. Selecting a wood with an appealing grain pattern is crucial for creating grips that are not only functional but also visually captivating.

Crafting Techniques for Precision and Comfort

The crafting process is where the vision for the grip comes to life. This stage requires a meticulous approach to ensure that the grip fits comfortably in the hand and enhances the firearm's functionality.

  • Hand-Carving vs. Machine-Cutting: Pros and Cons
Hand-carving allows for unparalleled customization and attention to detail, making each grip a unique piece of art. This method is ideal for creating grips that require intricate designs or specific ergonomic features. However, it is time-consuming and requires a high level of skill. Machine-cutting, on the other hand, offers consistency and efficiency, making it suitable for producing grips on a larger scale. While it may lack the personalized touch of hand-carving, it ensures precision and uniformity in the grips produced.
  • Finishing Touches: Staining and Sealing
The final step in the design process is the application of stains and sealants. Staining enhances the natural beauty of the wood, bringing out the depth and richness of the grain patterns. Sealing protects the wood from moisture, oils, and other elements that could damage it over time. These finishing touches not only improve the grip's appearance but also its durability, ensuring that it remains a cherished part of the firearm for years to come.
Through this detailed design process, custom wood grips are transformed from a mere concept into a tangible extension of the firearm, reflecting the shooter's personality and style. As we move forward, we'll explore the installation process, ensuring that your custom grips are perfectly fitted to your firearm.

Installing Your Custom Wood Grips

Tools and Materials Needed for Installation

Before beginning the installation process, gathering the right tools and materials is crucial. Essential items include a screwdriver set compatible with your firearm's grip screws, a small hammer for any necessary adjustments, soft cloths to protect the gun's surface, and, optionally, wood conditioner for the grips. For those looking to apply additional protective measures, a high-quality wood sealant can be applied prior to installation, ensuring the grips remain durable against the elements and regular handling.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Installing your custom wood grips involves several key steps, each designed to ensure a secure fit and optimal comfort. Following a systematic approach will not only protect your firearm and the grips but also enhance your overall experience.

  • Preparing Your Firearm for the New Grips
The first step involves safely unloading your firearm and removing any existing grips. This process varies depending on the firearm model but generally requires loosening the grip screws and gently separating the grips from the frame. It's essential to clean the grip area thoroughly, removing any dirt, oil, or residue that could affect the new grips' placement.
  • Adjusting for Fit and Comfort
With the firearm prepared, the next step is to test-fit the new wooden grips. This trial fitting allows you to check for any areas that may require adjustment for a perfect fit. In some cases, slight modifications to the grips might be necessary to accommodate unique firearm contours or user preferences for grip thickness. Once satisfied with the fit, securely attach the grips using the screws provided, being careful not to over-tighten and risk damaging the wood.
During this process, it's important to hold the firearm, mimicking shooting positions to ensure the grips feel comfortable in hand. Adjustments for comfort might include sanding down high spots or applying additional conditioning to the wood for a smoother finish. After these adjustments, the grips should feel like a natural extension of the firearm, offering improved handling and an enhanced aesthetic appeal.
Installing custom wood grips is a fulfilling process that significantly enhances a firearm's look and feel. With the right tools, materials, and a bit of patience, gun owners can achieve a custom fit that reflects their personal style and shooting preferences. As we conclude this guide, remember that custom wood grips are more than just accessories; they're a personal statement, a blend of art and functionality that elevates the firearm to a new level of individuality and performance.

Maintenance and Care for Wood Grips

Cleaning and Conditioning Your Wood Grips

Maintaining your wood grips begins with regular cleaning to remove any residue, oil, or dirt that could accumulate over time, potentially harming the wood's surface. For effective cleaning, use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe down the grips after each use. If you encounter more stubborn grime, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by a thorough drying to prevent any moisture damage.
Conditioning the wood is also critical in preserving its natural beauty and resilience. A quality wood conditioner, designed specifically for use on wooden gun grips, can be applied every few months to nourish the wood and prevent drying or cracking. This conditioner helps maintain the grips' luster and protects them against the elements, ensuring they remain comfortable in hand and visually appealing.

Protecting Your Grips from Wear and Tear

Wooden grips, while durable, are susceptible to wear and tear from regular use and exposure to harsh conditions. To protect your grips, consider using a high-quality wood sealant that provides a protective barrier against moisture, oils, and environmental factors that can degrade the wood over time. Applying a sealant can also enhance the wood's grain and color, adding an extra layer of beauty to your firearm.
In addition to using sealants, storing your firearm properly plays a crucial role in protecting the grips. When not in use, keep your firearm in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures, which can cause the wood to warp or fade. A gun safe with humidity control is ideal for preventing any moisture-related damage to the wood grips.
By adhering to these maintenance and care practices, your custom wood grips can last for years, maintaining their beauty and functionality. These grips are not only a reflection of your personal style but also an investment in the quality and performance of your firearm. Regular care ensures that this investment continues to pay dividends in both aesthetics and the overall shooting experience.
